County Introduction
Menifee county was established in 1869 and named after Richard Hickman Menifee (1809-1841), a lawyer, Kentucky Legislator and U.S. Congressman. The county seat is Frenchburg.


County Origins
Menifee County, Kentucky was formed from Bath County, Montgomery County, Morgan County, Powell County, and Wolfe County. Named for Richard Hickman Menefee, but a legislative aide mis-spelled the name while writing the enacting law that created the county. It was created on 1 May 1869.

Murder Branch Massacre10 mi. E. of Frenchburg, KY 1274 April 1793, Indians captured 19 women and children of Morgan's Station in Montgomery County. Overtaken north of here by posse. Indians massacred some captives, taking others across Ohio River. Last Indian raid into Kentucky.
Menifee CountyFrenchburg, Courthouse lawn, US 460 Formed 1869 out of part of five joining counties; named for Richard H. Menefee, regarded as one of Kentucky's great orators. Born in Owingsville, 1808. Elected Commonwealth Attorney of 11th Judicial district, 1831; State Representative, 1836-37; U.S. Representative, 1837-39. Died at age of 32. Kentucky lost "one of her proudest and fondest hopes."
Beaver Dam FurnaceScranton, KY 1274 Erected in 1819 by J. T. Mason. It began operations under Robert Crockett, ironmaster. The furnace was a big truncated pyramid of sandstone blocks, 35 feet high with a 28 foot square base. Some products were nails, "plough plates," kettles, skillets, flat irons. The goods were "flat-boated" down river to the markets. The furnace went out of business, 1870-73.
